April 3, 2012, 8:05 p.m.: VICE RECTOR Fr. Pablo Tiong, O.P. has assumed the post of Acting Rector of the University, the Office of the Secretary General confirmed early today.

This came after Fr. Rolando de la Rosa, O.P. stepped down last March 31 to end his third term as Rector of UST.

Article 11 of the University’s General Statutes states that: “The Vice-Rector of the University … assumes the authority of the Rector if the office becomes vacant until such time that a new Rector shall have been duly appointed.”

De la Rosa resigned a month ahead of the expiration of his term of office to start the process of selecting the next rector. In a previous interview with the Varsitarian, De la Rosa said the process usually takes two months.

The list of nominees for the rectorship has yet to be announced. De la Rosa is still eligible for another term.

Before he was appointed Vice Rector in 2008, Tiong served as director of the Center for Contextualized Theology and Ethics and the UST Purchasing Office. Daphne J. Magturo
