Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) ang mga Katoliko na manalangin
para sa ikasasaayos ng protesta ng mga miyembro ng Iglesia ni Cristo (INC) sa
Kahabaang Epifanio Delos Santos (EDSA) na nagsimula pa noong Biyernes.
“Pray without ceasing for a peaceful and just
resolution of the present dispute, in a manner both pleasing to God and in
conformity with the democratic convictions enunciated in our
Constitution,” ani Arsobispo Socrates Villegas ng Lingayen-Dagupan, pangulo
ng CBCP, sa kaniyang Facebook account.
Pinaalalahanan ni Villegas ang mga Katoliko na maging
mapagbigay sa lahat ng oras at pagkakataon. “Jesus, the Lord, willed His
disciples to be known by their love. No Catholic should fan the flames of
dissension by rumor-mongering and by inflammatory statements. Let all be kind
in disposition, respectful in speech and prudent in action.”
Hinikayat ng arsobispo ang mga Katolikong abogado at
propesor ng abogasiya na makiisa sa diskusyon tungkol sa tunay na kahulugan ng
pagkakahiwalay ng simbahan at ng estado ayon sa Saligang Batas nang walang
panghahatol.
“We seek to be enlightened on what the fundamental law
of the land provides, the boundaries of the freedom of religion and the rights
and the prerogatives of State,” aniya.
Hiniling ni Villegas na irespeto ang EDSA Shrine, na ayon sa
kaniya ay isang banal na gusali. “The EDSA Shrine is a Catholic center of
worship. It is a church. There is a Catholic priest assigned to it. We ask that
all respect the sacred character of the Edsa Shrine,” ani Villegas.
Iginiit pa niya na ang pagsunod sa batas ay isa sa mga
tungkulin ng mga Katoliko. Aniya: “Sons and daughters of the Church
cannot be less observant of the law than other citizens of the Republic.”
Nagbigay babala ang arsobispo laban sa mga oportunista na
maaaring manamantala sa protesta.
“No politician should gain political ground by abetting
dissension or, worse, fostering disregard of the Constitution and the law.
Neither is it morally correct for any political party to aim at gaining an
advantage by controlling a religious sect known to propose to its members a
chosen set of candidates,” ani Villegas.
Nagmula ang protesta ng mga miyembro ng INC sa direktang
pakikialam umano ng kalihim ng katarungan, Leila de Lima, sa kasong iligal na
pagkakakulong na inihain ng isang dating ministro ng sekta sa mga namumuno sa
Iglesia ni Cristo.
Kaugnay ito ng sigalot sa Iglesia na nagresulta sa
pagkatiwalag ng ilang miyembro na kaanak o malapit sa yumaong pinuno nito na si
Eraño Manalo.
Mula sa tapat ng opisina ng Department of Justice sa Ermita
sa Maynila, lumipat ang mga nagpoprotesta sa kahabaan ng EDSA kung saan
pinahintulutan silang magsagawa ng protesta hanggang ngayong araw. L.
