11 February 2016, 10:15 pm – YOUNG people who aren’t registered to vote can still be involved
in the May elections, ABS-CBN News Channel (ANC) anchor Cathy Yang said Thursday in
a UST forum.

This is by convincing registered voters to wisely choose the
next leaders of the country, Yang told Thomasians in the forum organized
by ANC and Aktiboto, the student-initiated UST voter education program for
young people.

The event was titled “Leadership Forum: Ipaglaban ang Pamilyang
Pilipino” (Fight for the Filipino Family), but speakers concentrated on youth
issues and the concept of governance.

Yang, a former Bloomberg TV anchor, pointed out that the youth
account for 40 percent of the 52 million Filipino voters.

“The power that this country has is the young population. The
youth vote is strong. The change in the students’ perception and their
confidence in voting is the start of something big,” she said in the forum at
the Buenaventura Garcia Paredes, O.P. Building.

For his part, Edmund Tayao, political science professor at the
Faculty of Arts and Letters, said oft-repeated slogans of “good
governance” would be empty without proper implementation. “There are
elements of good governance; oftentimes we hear transparency, openness, and the
most important of all, participation,” he said.

Emmanuel Lopez, chairman of the UST Department of Economics,
said good governance was more than just being trusted by the masses and having
high approval ratings.

“Good governance does not necessarily mean that you have the
correct decision because it is a process that has the total package of
leadership,” he said. J. P. P. Corpuz andA. A. M. Peralta
