STUDIES conducted by fifth-year chemical engineering students won in
the National Undergraduate Research Contest of the Philippine Institute of
Chemical Engineers last Feb. 18 in Boracay.

Winning
second place was study that used biaoag seed husks for biocharcoal production,
to lessen land and soil pollution. It was conducted by Jhullie Ann Bigso,
Carlito Dimaano, Jr. and Ian Kenneth Micaller.

“We
have thought of continuing our study in the future because it actually has the
potential to alleviate climate change and pollution,” Micaller told the Varsitarian.

Mary
Daphne Buti, Anthony Cruz and Jamie Ashley San Juan, bagged third place for
their study titled “Development of an optical sensor based on immobilized
dithizone on polyvinyl chloride in the determination of cadmium (II) ions for
the monitoring of proper effluent disposal.”

The
study by Paola Jachin Abejero, Maria Angelica Galapon, and Justin Edrik
Gregorio, titled “Optimization of process parameters for the photocatalytic
degradation of lignin using nano-TiO2 co-doped with iron and niobium by
response surface methodology,” was among the finalists.

Students from the
University of the Philippines-Diliman won first place. Vianca A. Ocampo
