TWO SHORT films by Thomasians were among the finalists in a film-making contest organized by Filipino movie channel Cinema One, with plots that tackled the plight of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) community.

Faculty of Arts and Letters students Johmar Damiles, Kim Renomeron and Christen Perez made it to the top 10 of the Cinema One Minute Student Film Competition. Each entry was required to have a running time of not more than a minute.

Damiles and Renomeron’s film, “Mot-Mot,” deals with a couple’s attempt to engage in a sexual encounter. The boy is eventually revealed to be a homosexual.

“Gusto namin ma-tackle yung LGBT without it being direct, because it’s not always about the struggles of being an LGBT,” said Renomeron, a third-year literature student.

“Ikaw/Ako” by Perez, a communication arts student, began as a group project for her broadcast media class. The short film depicts the friendship between two unnamed protagonists and how one helps the other come to terms with his sexual identity.

“I believe self-acceptance is one of the most difficult things to achieve in life but once you truly know and love who you’re supposed to be, then being yourself amid the harsh judgement of society and other people won’t be a problem anymore,” Perez said in an interview with the Varsitarian.

Damiles, also a communication arts student, urged aspiring filmmakers to join competitions.

“Gusto ko sana mapalaganap `yung film culture sa UST, that anyone who is interested in film-making, may it be short- or full-length, ay ma-encourage na mag-produce,” he said.

The Cinema One Minute Student Film Competition is part of the annual Cinema One Originals film festival, to be held on Nov. 14 to 22. The shorts are available for viewing at the festival’s official YouTube channel.
