Oct. 19 2016, 8:12 p.m. – A MITSUBISHI Montero Sport, the vehicle model that has figured in a number of alleged cases of “sudden unintended acceleration,” hit and damaged a portion of the Tan Yan Kee Student Center Building last Oct. 14.

An incident report from the UST Security Office stated that Paulito Abraham, driver of the Mitsubishi vehicle, was driving toward Gate 10 when his car “suddenly accelerated,” hitting first a Suzuki Vitara before crashing to a side of the building.

The Vitara was owned by an employee of the Office for Student Affairs.

Security chief Joseph Badinas said the cause of the accident remained unclear.

“Based din sa statement ng driver na `yan, naka-off naman `yung engine that time, then pinaandar niya. Once nagstart `yung sasakyan, tumakbo nang tuloy-tuloy [`yung sasakyan]. Hindi na rin gumana `yung brake niya, pati `yung airbag,” Badinas said in an interview with the Varsitarian.

Badinas said Abraham, a driver of a UST student, failed to fasten his seatbelt, causing the airbag to malfunction. Abraham suffered a mild head injury.

Abraham is liable for the repair of the damaged portion of building, he said.

The incident report said Abraham was “aware of reports that his model of Mitsubishi Montero Sport has been known to suddenly accelerate without warning.”
