Oct. 24 2016, 9:01 p.m. – ASIA’S oldest university will confer the title “honorary professor” on award-winning Peruvian-Spanish author Mario Vargas Llosa on his visit on Nov. 7.

Llosa will drop by the UST Miguel de Benavides Library before delivering a lecture in Spanish at the Grand Ballroom of the Buenaventura Garcia Paredes, O.P. Building.

As president of the worldwide literary organization Poets, Playwrights, Essayists and Novelists (PEN) International from 1976 to 1979, he visited Manila in 1978 to meet Philippine PEN members including National Artist for Literature F. Sionil Jose.

He was the recipient of the 2010 Nobel Prize in Literature “for his cartography of structures of power and his trenchant images of the individual’s resistance, revolt and defeat.”

In 1994, Llosa received the Miguel de Cervantes Prize, an award for outstanding writers in the Spanish language.

Llosa’s return to the Philippines is upon the invitation of Instituto Cervantes de Manila, the cultural arm of the Embassy of Spain in the country.
