Must-see plays and exhibits by Thomasians this May to June

THOMASIANS showcase their artistic prowess in a number of art exhibitions, musicals an theatrical performances running until June. Here is a short list:

Kapitan Sino (May 3 to 6 at the Albertus Magnus Auditorium)
To culminate their 39th season, Teatro Tomasino will stage an adaptation of “Kapitan Sino,” a novel by a Filipino author under the pen name Bob Ong. The story revolves around Rogelio Manglicmot, an electrician in the small barrio of Pelaez who suddenly becomes a super hero. Part of the cast ensemble is comedian John Lapus, a Teatro Tomasino alumnus.

Bakunawa: Ang Mahiwagang Nilalang ng Lawa sa Sebu (May 4 to 5 at the UST Seminary Gym)
In partnership with the Institute of Physical Education and Athletics, the UST Salinggawi Dance Troupe will hold the 49th edition of their annual dance concert titled “Bakunawa: Ang Mahiwagang Nilalang ng Lawa ng Sebu.” The name takes inspiration from the gigantic sea serpent in Philippine mythology that is believed to swallow the moon and cause eclipses.

Small Wonders by Ang Ilustrador ng Kabataan Exhibit (until May 5 at the Globe Art Gallery of The Globe Tower, Bonifacio Global City, Taguig City)
Ang Ilustrador ng Kabataan, a non-profit organization for Filipino book illustrators, features 30 artistic and miniature windows in their latest exhibit. Included in the lineup are Thomasian talents Aaron Asis, Nerfs Deona, Mark Ruste, Eriko Pedojan, Veronica Silva and Jay Lumboy.

Legally Blonde: The Musical (May 9 to 13 at the Albertus Magnus Auditorium)
For their 20th anniversary major musical production, the UST Mediartrix will stage a musical adaptation of the 2001 hit comedy classic “Legally Blonde” by Australian director Robert Luketic based on Amanda Brown’s novel of the same title.

Ligalig: Art in Time of Turmol (until May 27 at Ateneo Art Gallery)
Works of renowned alumni artists such as J. Elizalde Navarro, Jose Tence Ruiz and Alfredo Esquillo Fernandez are featured in an exhibit of paintings, prints and sketches that depict historical events in the country. The visual artworks are accompanied by poems and audiovisual presentations.

EDUARDO CASTRILLO: A Prism of Art and Friendship (until June 4 at Ayala Museum, Makati City)
The Ayala Museum and Castrillo Art Legacy Studio will commemorate the late sculptor Eduardo Castrillo, the artist behind historical monuments such as the People Power Monument along EDSA and Spirit of Pinaglabanan in San Juan City. The exhibit will feature some of Castrillo’s small-scale works.

Arturo Luz: First Light (until June 11 at the 3rd Floor Galleries of Ayala Museum, Makati City)
The survey exhibit is part of Ayala Museum’s “Images of Nation,” a museum program which showcases works by Filipino artists who have been named National Artists for Visual Arts. Curated by historian Ambeth R. Ocampo, a close friend of Luz, this exhibit celebrates the artist’s 90th birthday and his 60th year as a professional visual artist.
