‘Fidel’ dominates Sampung Sulyap 2017

A SHORT film by the College of Fine Arts and Design (CFAD) Student Council bagged nine awards, including Best Picture, in the “Sampung Sulyap” film festival awards night last May 13 at the Thomas Aquinas Research Complex Auditorium.

CFAD Student Council’s entry, titled “Fidel,” also won Best in Advocacy, Best Cinematography, Best Storyline, the People’s Choice Award, Student Leaders’ Choice Award and Best in Citation Award.

“Fidel” lead actor Miguel Tolentino and director Justin Dan Orcyllo emerged as Best Actor in a Lead Role and Best Director, respectively.

“Fidel” tells the story of Fidel Perez, an ice cream vendor in UST.

CFAD Touchpoint’s “Dito Parin: The Luz Dentro Story” took home the award for Second Best Film. Chesca Hernandez won Best Actress in a Lead Role while actor Miguel Broño won Best Actor in a Supporting Role.

Mecca Verejano of the UST Heritage Conservation Society bagged the Best Actress in a Supporting Role award for the short film “Hilahil,” which bagged the Third Best Film Award.

The judges for this year’s Sampung Sulyap were acclaimed author Eros Atalia, writer Jean Paolo Hernandez, producer Frank Lloyd Mamaril and Cinemalaya People’s Choice awardee Cyrus Valdez. The films were graded on a 200-point criteria.

“Sampung Sulyap” is the annual university-wide short film festival hosted by Becarios de Santo Tomas, the organization of University scholars.

On its sixth year, the short-film festival featured stories of change in the lives of 10 Thomasians. The participating films were produced by local- and university-wide student organizations.
