An advertising arts alumnus of UST was among the recipients of the 2018 Thirteen Artists Awards (TAA), a triennial recognition for visual artists held last March 14 at the Cultural Center of the Philippines’ MKP Hall.

Janos de la Cruz earned the votes of this year’s panel of judges with his diverse portfolio in painting, sculpture, and printmaking.

“I am very thankful and humbled to win the award. I [have] always believed that art has an important role in the socio-cultural transformation of our society, and this award is a testament on the continued pursuit of young artists such as myself in exploring new avenues of artistic expression,” de la Cruz said in an online interview with the Varsitarian.

De la Cruz is known for incorporating socio-political themes in his art.

“I am a storyteller. I create my artworks with the sole intention of creating modern-day fables. My artworks are filled with pop culture imagery but at the same time it talks about the social and political turmoil in our society. Basically, I draw inspiration from my everyday life,” he added.

The Thirteen Artists Awards is a curatorial project of the CCP Museum that began in the 1970s. It honors 13 Filipino artists born after 1978 based on artistic integrity, innovativeness, forcefulness of ideas, and responsiveness to contemporary realities for the last three years of their careers.

Artists Yasmin Ching, Noel Cuizon, Leonilo Doloricon, and Ofelia Gelvizon-Tequi judged this year’s TAA.
