HISTORY alumna Hannah Joy Ibarra won in the collegiate category of the essay writing contest “What’s EUr Story?” organized by the European Union (EU) delegation to the Philippines.

Ibarra’s winning entry, “The Power of Education,” tackled the influence of European education in the country.

“I am inspired by the European influence in education, exemplified in our libraries and our own language,” Ibarra said during the launching of the winning essay collection last Nov. 7 at Hotel Jen in Pasay.

Ibarra said the country’s architecture and educational system are among the important Western influences appreciated by Filipinos.

“It really influenced us, for example, in some of the words we use until today. I want them (Filipinos) to have a new perspective in viewing our colonial history because we tend to have this purely negative view towards colonization,” she said.

The winning essays were chosen by the EU delegation Ambassador Franz Jessen and National Artist for Literature F. Sionil Jose.
