The deputy secretary general of the Bhutan National Commission for the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco) visited the University last June 15.

Jamyang Choeden arrived at the Arch of the Centuries and was welcomed by Unesco Club-UST president Yjez Batulan together with the club’s officers. Choeden stayed in the country for a week and UST was part of her itinerary.

“We are in the process of starting Unesco clubs in Bhutan and the Ministry of Education sent me to see the activities carried out by the clubs here,”

Choeden said. “The ministry thought I could learn how the clubs work and try implementing what I have learned to our Unesco clubs in Bhutan.”

Choeden also said the University tour was recommended by the Unesco National Commission-Philippines.

Batulan gave Choeden a tour of the University, showing her the Benavides Park, the Santissimo Rosario Chapel, the Quadricentennial Square and the Miguel de Benavides Library.

Public and Alumni Affairs Office director Prof. Giovanna Fontanilla facilitated Choeden’s museum tour.

Choeden also visited Ramon Magsaysay High School, San Beda College and the Philippine Normal University to see the Unesco club activities in those schools.

Choeden was accompanied by the commission’s administrative officer Laurence Dumanag. Dumanag said Choeden previously visited Japan to see the Unesco base there.

The Unesco Club-UST was founded two years ago by its first president Rior Santos. The club aims to produce young ambassadors who will play an active role in society by upholding the principles of compassion, commitment and competence in practicing and teaching equality, tolerance and complete rejection of violence to build an educated and cultured community.
