THE MANAGING editor of the Varsitarian, the official student publication of the University of Santo Tomas, won the Lasallian Scholarum Award last Oct. 22 for her opinion column calling for an amendment to the law on the Filipino language.

Bernadette Pamintuan, a journalism senior in UST, bagged the Outstanding Published Feature Article on Youth and Education in a School Organ for her entry “Patingkarin ang kulay ng ating mga katutubong wika.”

Pamintuan said the Filipino language is dynamic and should be subject to further research.

“Buhay na buhay at dinamiko ang wikang Filipino. Marami pang wikang hindi napag-aaralan o natutuklasan. Kailangan natin ng mas maraming oras upang magsaliksik at ipamalas ang kapangyarihan nito upang mapag-isa ang mga mamamayan,” Pamintuan said in an interview.

Other nominees for the same category were two other articles from the Varsitarian and 11 from Ateneo de Manila’s the Guidon, De La Salle University’s the La Sallian and University of the Philippines Diliman’s Philippine Collegian.

The Lasallian Scholarum Awards is an annual recognition program for outstanding media coverage on the Filipino youth and education issues by print, photo, broadcast and campus journalists.
