Security guards undergo disaster-preparedness course

WHEN disaster strikes, who you gonna call?

The University’s security personnel may just be the answer—especially now that they have undergone disaster-preparedness training.

Dr. Lito Maranan, UST Red Cross Youth Chapter adviser, discussed basic but crucial reactions when disaster strikes, as well as the general aspects of a disaster, general procedures in any emergency, proper first-aid administration, building evacuation, and use and handling of firefighting equipment to the security personnel last May 12 and 13 at the Beato Angelico Bldg.

Fr. Abaño: Preserve heritage through Church

UST SECRETARY-General Fr. Isidro Abaño, O.P. pointed out that the Church plays a big part of preserving the cultural and historical heritage of a parish during a national convention of church cultural heritage workers.

According to Fr. Abaño’s paper, “The Philosophy and Theology of Ecclesiastical Cultural Heritage Management,” pastoral workers need to search for openings in some theological areas to embark on a concrete project that will help them preserve the cultural heritage of their parish without sacrificing its basic pastoral needs.

New ROTC Corps Commander tours NCR

AFTER being elected president of the Regional Corps Commanders Association, UST’s first lady Corps Commander will visit the different ROTC-NCR member-institutions to elicit student support for ROTC in the region.

“I want to promote ROTC. I want to show that this organization is still alive,” C/Maj. Therese Altamirano told the Varsitarian.

The incoming College of Commerce senior also said she would “actively involve” Thomasian cadets in the organization.

Archi students in hot water for fisticuffs

FOUR Architecture students are now under investigation after allegedly engaging in a fistfight inside the Beato Angelico Building (Beato) last May 3.

In a statement made to the Safety and Security Service (UST-SSS), formerly the Security Affairs Office, incoming sophomore Eduard Christopher Molina said incoming juniors Cyrus John Lee, Choel Mark Flores, and Rodrigo Caling, ganged up on him near the fourth floor elevator of the Beato.

UST relaunches ‘T-mail’, trains users

TO IMPROVE corres-pondence and collaboration with other schools and companies, the Santo Tomas e-Service Providers (Steps) launched Thomasian e-mail (TEM) last April 25, replacing the old UST Computer Center e-mail system.

TEM is available to both the administrators and academic and non-academic employees and will help establish contacts outside UST, said Steps faculty trainer Charmaine Salvador.

UST eyes oral history as new research method

A UNIVERSITY professor and Center for Intercultural Studies (CIS) researcher emphasized the use of basic principles of oral history as a new research methodology during the “University belt seminar on the streets of Manila” last April 21 at the Thomas Aquinas Research Complex (TARC) seminar-workshop rooms.

“Oral history is dependent on humans because they are an inexhaustible source of information, however, the basic features of this new research method may also be its downsides because the method is quite subjective and time-consuming,” Prof. Erlita Mendoza said.

National Artist Ang Kiukok rests brush, 74

FOR THOSE who paid tribute to National Artist for Visual Arts Ang Kiukok, few words were left to describe the painter who would rather show than tell.

In a necrological service to honor the world-renowned Thomasian painter last May 15, hundreds of mourners including family, friends, fellow National Artists, and admirers gathered to pay their last respects to the late expressionist at the Cultural Center of the Philippines Main Theater in Pasay City.

AFTER 27 years, another Thomasian has topped the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) board Exams.

Magna cum laude graduate Jhoanna Go registered a 93.86 per cent to lead the new batch of CPAs, who took the exams last May 8, 9, 15, and 16. Go graduated in 2003.

“Finally my dream had become a reality, I was so happy I cried,” Go said. “Also, I was very relieved because the ordeal was over.”

Reunited at last

EVEN in death, Manuel and Aurora Quezon have not reneged on the promise they made on their wedding day—to be together no matter what. Thanks to the efforts of their children and the National Historical Institute, they have remained true to their vow.

To mark her 56th death anniversary last April 28, the late first lady’s remains were re-interred beside the crypt of her husband, Commonwealth President Manuel L. Quezon, at the Quezon Memorial Shrine.
