AN EDUCATION lawyer has called for policies that address cybercrime cases in educational institutions.

Joseph Noel Estrada, legal counsel of Catholic Educational Association of the Philippines, said schools should recognize the dangers of social media abuse.

“The problem with cyberspace, social media [is] they provide tools to improve communication of our schools and our community, [but] they also provide challenges in our school,” Estrada said in a forum last May 10 at Novotel in Cubao, Quezon City.

Estrada urged schools to draft social media policies involving students, teachers and administrators.

“Reduce inappropriate use of social media in school by adopting a strong policy statement in your school on the importance of creating an atmosphere of mutual respect,” Estrada said.

Estrada, who earned his law degree in UST, said cybercrimes such as cyber bullying and libel occur even in academic communities.

The forum, “Web Impact Redefining Education Policy,” was organized by the Estrada & Aquino law firm. Other speakers were UST Senior High School Principal Pilar Romero and St. Scholastica’s College Student Affairs Dean Rhodora Angela Ferrer.
