15 September 2014, 3:56 p.m. – THE UST Tiger Paddlers capped their first round with a solid performance
after landing on third place over the weekend in the UAAP Season 77 men’s table
tennis tournament at the Ateneo Blue Eagle Gym.

UST wounded up with a 5-2
win-loss record, losing only against De La Salle University and University of
the Philippines heading into the second round next week.

La Salle leads the tournament with a
clean 7-0 card followed by UP with a 6-1 slate.

In a close game, the Tiger Paddlers
edged National University, 3-2, behind veterans Gil Ablanque, Adolfo Bazar and
Christian Abendan.

UST also cruised past Far Eastern
University, Ateneo de Manila, Adamson University and host University of the
East to end the first round.

“The players are still adjusting.
I hope by the second round, they can use their full ability,” Tiger
Paddlers coach Jackson Que said.

Despite parity among all schools
resulting in tightly contested games, Que believes the Tiger Paddlers will find
their footing in the next round and finish strong.

“I strongly believe that we’ll
finish first or at least second come the second round,” he said.

In the women’s division, the UST Lady
Paddlers capped their first round at fourth place with a 3-3 record.

The Lady Paddlers scored a pair of
victories against NU, 3-1, and Admason, 3-0.

However, UST fell in the hands of
defending champion University of the Philippines, 2-3.

The UST
Paddlers will advance to the second round with high hopes of making the Final
Four on Sept. 20 to 21 at the same venue. Josiah Darren
