THE UST Growling Tigers has recruited Cebuano guard Zachary
Huang of the reigning Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) juniors champions
Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles.

“I am really a
competitive person and in Manila there is a higher level of competition and
that is why I opted to go there rather than stay in Cebu,” Huang told the Varsitarian in an email.

The 6’2’’ combo guard said UST was the only UAAP school that
offered him a slot after Tigers head coach Bong dela Cruz saw him in action
during the 2014 Palarong Pambansa.

The 17-year-old stalwart said he also received offers from
schools in Cebu, as well as Colegio de San Juan de Letran and San Beda College
in Manila. But he said he opted to pick UST also because of its academic
program. He intends to take up industrial engineering.

“UST has a good history in education. Knowing their
reputation, I knew it was a good opportunity for me to study there,” he said.

Huang will have his work cut out for him as he still have to
fight for minutes with Mario Bonleon from La Salle-Greenhills and
University of the Philippines’ Kyle Suarez, who will both be joining the team
next season as well.

“I still have to improve my speed, ball handling and get
bigger. Going to the collegiate level, I think I should get bigger so that I
won’t get bullied by bigger guards,” Huang said.
