THE UST Golden Shuttlers posted contrasting finishes in the UAAP Season 80 badminton tournament at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex Saturday.
The Male Shuttlers thrashed University of the East, 4-1, while the Female Shuttlers succumbed to Adamson University, 1-4.
John Yabut and Cris John Sanchez scored quick wins for UST while the pair of John Reyes and Mark Sotea swept UE’s Arman Manlangit and John Cruz, 21-13, 21-15.
In women’s play, Lady Shuttlers captain Maria Victoria Vizmonte and Venice Panotes fell to Adamson’s Clydel Pada and Jhay Anne Macabenta, respectively, in the first two games.
The duo of Macabenta and Joanna San Pedro sealed the deal for Adamson after routing Panotes and Evan Mariksha Teope, 21-10, 21-18.
The Lady Shuttlers’ lone win of the day came from the Vizmonte-Ann Pimentel tandem after conquering Pada and Mikaela Aquino, 22-20, 22-20.
“Ang pinakamaganda sana na pwedeng mangyari is 5-0. For the girls, nabigo kaming isecure yung slot 5 position namin last year,” UST head coach RJ Ormilla told the Varsitarian.
The Male Shuttlers have a 1-1 win-loss record while their female counterparts slipped to 0-2.
The Golden Shuttlers will go head-to-head against the National University and the University of the Philippines in the men’s and women’s division, respectively, on Sept. 24, Sunday, at the same venue.
