THE UST Male Shuttlers ended their UAAP campaign at fourth place after succumbing to Ateneo de Manila University, 3-1, in the UAAP Season 80 badminton tournament at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex Sunday.
Ateneo captain Carlo Remo and 2016 Rookie of the Year Keoni Asuncion grabbed easy wins against Male Shuttlers John Edgar Reyes and John Paul Yabut.
The tandem of Remo and Asuncion then sealed their bronze finish after toppling the UST duo of Kristian Barrios and Juan Miguel Santiago, 21-15, 21-18.
“Palagay ko pressure ang nangyari. Kumbaga it’s either nabigatan sila sa responsibilidad nila sa team. Sobrang di nila mahandle. [And] maganda din yung nilaro ng kalaban,” UST coach RJ Ormilla told the Varsitarian.
The Reyes-Sotea pair gave UST its lone match win after drubbing Clarence Filart and Kevin Chan, 21-10, 22-18.
UST will miss the services of Sotea and Reyes next year after exhausting their playing years. Male Shuttler Cris Sanchez will also skip next season’s tournament to focus on his academics.
