THE UST Golden Sox blew past the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons, 9-5, in the UAAP Season 80 baseball tournament at Rizal Memorial Stadium Sunday.
UST’s Ian Llave nailed the go-ahead shallow right field run-batted-in that sent Ron De la Cruz to homeplate in the fifth inning, 5-4.
“Buti na-kondisyon si Jackson (Acuña, pitcher), na-hold niya (ang UP)”, UST head coach Jeffrey Santiago said.
In the sixth inning, the Golden Sox pulled away after a trio of runs courtesy of Alwen Calbang, Benedict Pedracio and Marlon Gonzales, 9-5.
UP took an early lead in the second inning after four runs by Allen Mercado, Jayrick Lirio, Gabby Yang and Phonso Balagtas, 4-1.
Fighting Maroon Gabby Yang was ejected after throwing a shoulder to Golden Sox second baseman Pedracio.
The Golden Sox improved to a 2-1 win-loss slate.
UST will face the Adamson University Soaring Falcons on Feb. 14, Wednesday, at the same venue.
