Brawl mars La Salle’s shellacking of Growling Tigers in Filoil

TWELVE players were ejected in a melee that marred De La Salle University’s 109-81 beating of the winless UST Growling Tigers in the Filoil Flying V Preseason Cup at the Arena in San Juan Sunday.

Marvin Lee’s hard foul on La Salle’s Ramil Tero triggered a free-for-all with 20 seconds left in the game.

Lee, Carlos Escalambre, Christian Garcia, Jordan Sta. Ana, Jeepy Faundo, Zachy Huang, Oliver de Guzman and Edwin Caño were ejected from UST’s side.

La Salle’s Tero, Santi Santillan, Gabe Capacio and Ricci Rivero were also hrown out.

Tero and Lee, who declined to comment after the game, will each serve a one-game suspension.

It was a highly physical game with both teams combining for a total of 54 fouls.

UST trimmed an 18-point deficit to 10 after Sta. Ana’s layup. But La Salle dropped a 22-1 bomb to secure the win.

The Tigers remained winless in three games while La Salle won its second straight game.

Ben Mbala led the Green Archers with 21 points and nine rebounds while Aljun Melecio and Rivero chipped in 17 apiece.

Lee carried paced UST with 18 points.

UST will face the University of Perpetual Help on Wednesday, May 17, 5:00 pm, at the same venue.
