THE UST Spikers notched four victories to secure a Final Four spot in the UAAP Season 80 beach volleyball tournament at the SM Sands by the Bay Sunday.

The men’s team improved to a 5-1 record for second place, while the Lady Spikers are tied with the Far Eastern University with a 6-0 card.

The Tiger Spikers smashed both the De La Salle University Green Archers, 21-13, 21-14, and the University of the East Red Warriors, 21-10, 21-10.

Against UE, UST opened the second set with a 16-4 run to gain the upper hand before Anthony Arbasto’s crosscourt kill sealed another win for the Tiger Spikers.

Arbasto finished with 15 points while reigning MVP Kris Roy Guzman added 14.

Clifford Inoferio and Alfred Aljas had five points apiece for UE.

UST coach Paul Jan Doloiras said the pair’s consistency was key to its win.

In women’s play, the Lady Spikers thrashed the Lady Warriors, 21-7, 21-9.

The Lady Spikers were on the driver’s seat for most of the second set, before sparking an 11-3 burst wrapped up by an off-speed hit from Caitlyn Viray to vanquish the hapless Lady Warriors.

Women’s reigning MVP Cherry Ann Rondina unloaded 16 points while Viray chipped in 13.

Lady Warriors Judith Abil and Angelica Dacaymat combined for seven points.

The Tiger Spikers will gun for a twice-to-beat advantage in the semifinals while the Lady Spikers will try to complete another tournament sweep for an outright trip back to the finals.

Both teams will end the eliminations against FEU on Oct. 12, Thursday. Long-time beach volleyball mentor Emil Lontoc, who steered UST to multiple titles, will call the shots for FEU.
