THE UST Male and Female Woodpushers inched closer to the semifinals with back-to-back wins over the University of the Philippines and University of the East, respectively, in the UAAP Season 79 chess tournament at the UST Quadricentennial Pavilion Saturday.

The Male Woodpushers blasted the Fighting Maroons, 3-1, while the Female Woodpushers took home a 2.5-1.5 victory against the Lady Warriors.

Heirry Manaloto and Christian Flores gave UST an early 2-0 lead before Jhon Peter Ablid defeated MC Labasano to secure the win. UP’s Alson Lim Jr. prevented a possible UST sweep by defeating Philip Uy.

In women’s play, the Female Woodpushers zoomed to a 2-0 lead following wins from May Ann Alcantara and Highzzy Manaloto.

Virginie Ruaya gave UE its first win of the day but Michaela Concio pulled off a draw to provide UST enough cushion to get the victory.

The Female Woodpushers (20.5 points) are lurking behind third-seed UE and fourth-seed Adamson, who both have 21 points, while the Male Woodpushers (25 points) solidified their hold of the third place behind NU (34.5 points) and FEU (32 points).

Chess action resumes tomorrow at the De La Salle University Henry Sy Hall.
