THE UST Male and Female Woodpushers settled for 2-2 draws against the De La Salle University and the University of the Philippines, respectively, in the UAAP Season 79 chess tournament at the DLSU Henry Sy Hall Sunday.
The Female Woodpushers (22.5 points) dislodged University (21 points) for the fourth spot against.
The Male Woodpushers (27 points) dropped to fourth place behind National University (38 points), Far Eastern University (35 points) and University of the East (28 points).
Michaela Concio drew first blood against Martina Casiano but UP equalized after Ruth De Guzman’s victory over May Ann Alcantara.
UST was up 2-1 after Cyamir Villanueva’s victory. But Highzzy Manaloto lost to Ynna Canape.
In men’s play, Male Woodpusher Normiel De Jesus’ loss against Denzel Amar proved to be costly as La Salle salvaged a draw.
“Siya (De Jesus) ang pinakamatanda, mas magaling pa kesa kay Jhon Ablid. Pero wala, hindi marunong manalo,” UST head coach Ronald Dableo told the Varsitarian.
UST’s Heirry Manaloto and Christian Flores defeated Jeazzir Surposa and Christian Nañola, respectively, but Ablid faltered against La Salle’s Govani Mejia.
Chess action will continue on April 1, Saturday, at the same venue.
