THE UST Woodpushers fell short against the De La Salle University and the University of the Philippines in the UAAP Season 80 chess tournament opener at the Quadricentennial Pavilion Saturday.
The Male Woodpushers dropped a 0.5-3.5 decision against La Salle while the Female Woodpushers took a 1.5-2.5 beating from UP.
UST’s John Ablid salvaged a draw with La Salle’s Jeazzir Surposa, while Heirry Manaloto, Christian Flores and Michael Manansala dropped their respective matches.
In women’s play, Female Woodpusher May Ann Alcantara gave UST its only win after dominating UP’s Mytzka Mendoza, while Michaela Concio settled for a draw with Fighting Maroon Ruth de Guzman.
UST’s Highzzy Manaloto and Shayxanthe Guico lost to UP’s Arvie Lozano and Ynna Canape, respectively.
UST chess teams will face Adamson University tomorrow, 1 p.m., at the same venue.
