UST Tiger Fencers win another gold; 2nd behind UE

February 12, 2016, 12:28p.m. THE UST Tiger Fencers notched another gold medal on Day 2 of the UAAP Season 78 fencing tournament at the Ateneo Blue Eagle Gym Thursday.

Women’s team captain Maylene Pailma snatched the Tiger Fencers’ fourth gold medal by defeating University of the East’s Alleine Cortey, 15-14, in the women’s sabre event.

Pailma was on the verge of losing but the UST fencing team captain but salvaged a victoru by landing an attack squarely on her opponent’s chest.

UST’s Eileen de Guzman lost via abandonment after she injured her right knee against Far Eastern University’s Dolly Mae Curiba in their quarterfinals match.

Gisella Rey (women’s epee) settled for silver after losing to Lady Warrior Keren Panganiban, 15-9.

In the girls’ sabre event, Andrea Alarcon and Cherline Perez won bronze after bowing to UE’s Carla Arreza and Queen Dalmacio.

In the boys’ foil event, Samuel Mangarin failed to get past the Tableau of 8, losing to FEU-FERN’s Markke Abaygar, 7-15. Junior fencer Anthony Mangarin also crashed out early in the Tableau of 16, losing 7-15 to FEU-FERN’s Jordan Lee.

UST head coach Champ Fuenzalida said his team, now behind UE at second place, still has a shot at the overall crown.

The Fencers now hold a 4-1-2 gold-silver-bronze medal tally midway through the four-day event. They will now focus on team events, beginning with the men’s and boys’ epee tourneys Friday (Feb. 12) at the same venue.
