UST Tiger Fencers finish 2nd anew

February 13, 2016, 7:47p.m. THE UST Tiger Fencers duplicated their second-place finish last year at the conclusion of the UAAP Season 78 fencing tournament held at the Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagle Gym Saturday.

UST clinched three silver medals and three bronze en route to a final tally of 6-7-8 gold-silver-bronze medals.

The University of the East Red Warriors extended their championship streak in the men’s division to four straight titles and eight consecutive championships in the women’s division.

UST’s Maylene Pailma, Cherie Mañago, Dyren Faith Peñaflor and Eileen de Guzman fell short against UE in a nailbiter, 42-45, in the women’s team sabre finals.

The group of Andrea Marie Alarcon, Cherline Anne Perez, Chloe Chacon and Precious Sapungan also notched silver after bowing to the Lady Warriors in the girls’ sabre finals, 35-45.

Ashley Espiritu, Gisela Rey, Mariel Peralta and Maricar Dizon settled for bronze after a 34-45 defeat to De La Salle in the semifinals of the women’s team epee.

The men’s team foil of Alexander Macaraig, Gian Carlo Aribe, Jessie James Suarez and Rodolfo Duterte also settled for bronze after a 18-45 crushing from the Red Warriors.

Pauline Bernate, Charlize Linatud, Keziah Chua and Pia Bachmann grabbed second place, losing to UE, 33-45, in the girls’ epee finals.

Anthony Mari Macaraig, Samuel Mangarin, Daniel Villanueva and Joseph Amores were not able to get past UE, 27-45, in the semifinals of the boys’ foil event and won bronze.

Junior Tiger Fencer Daniel Villanueva was named Most Valuable Player for the boys’ division.
