The UST Tiger Fencers bagged one gold and two bronze medals in Day 1 of the UAAP fencing tournament at the Philsports Arena in Pasig Thursday.

For the fourth-straight year, Tiger Fencer Noelito Jose won gold in the individual epee category after nosing out University of the East’s Marlow Osayan, 15-13.

“Lahat ng mga player lumalakas. Pantay ‘yung laro eh. ‘Di namin alam kung sino mananalo. Depende sa mga bata kung kinabahan, talo ka. Kaya kailangan ng lakas na loob,” UST epee coach Arman Bernal told the Varsitarian.

Rodolfo Duterte fell to Jose in the semifinal round, 6-15, for the bronze medal in the same division.

Sherlyn Jose notched the Lady Fencers’ only medal of the day after succumbing to UE’s Wilhelmina Lozada in the semifinals, 13-15, for the bronze in the foil category.

Team captain Maricar Dizon crashed out of the quarterfinals of the same category after losing to La Salle’s Divine Romero, 3-15.

In juniors’ play, Eunice Daniel Villanueva won gold in the saber division while Timothy Gonzales (boys’ epee) Jannah Allysah Catantan (girls’ foil) notched bronze.

The individual events will continue tomorrow, 8 a.m., at the same venue.
