TWO WEEKS after helping UST capture the UAAP men’s judo title, team captain Al Llamas won silver in his first international tournament in Malaysia Saturday.
Llamas, a two-time UAAP MVP, surrendered a yuko (1/8 point) in the golden round against Indonesia’s Maulana Imam at the 5th Jigoro Kano Memorial Judo Championship in Penang.
“Satisfied naman [sa silver medal]. Surprised ako kasi hindi ako nag-expect ng anything. Sabi ko lang na ibubuhos ko lahat,” Llamas told the Varsitarian.
After scoring an ippon (whole point) in the first two rounds of the tournament, Llamas won via disqualification after his semifinal opponent, Shuzon Mazumder of Canada, retired due to a hamstring injury.
