UST’S Sydney Sy Tancontian bagged two gold medals in the 4th Women’s Martial Arts Festival judo competition at the SM Harrison Plaza in Malate, Manila last July 27.

Tancontian topped fellow Thomasian Kathleen Mae Ferriols, De La Salle University’s Joyce Ann Barsaga and Far Eastern University’s Sofia Marie Belonio for the gold in the -78 kg division.

She also lorded it over Aisilinn Yap and Colline Pecdasen of UST in the +70 kg division.

“My recent win helped me gain confidence. It also served as an evaluation kung saan pa po kailangan mag-improve in terms of my game, kasi na-test po talaga ‘yung composure ko during the [event,]” Tancontian said in an online interview with the Varsitarian.

The competition served as part of Tancontian’s rigorous training for her debut in the Southeast Asian Games on August 19 to 30 at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

“It is a privilege and an honor to represent the Philippines,” the 17-year-old Tancontian said. “It is also a great opportunity for me to experience that in such a young age and to be able to inspire young aspirants like me.”
