15 September 2013, 7:16 p.m. – “Bawi, ‘Gawi” didn’t happen.

Redemption didn’t come for members of the UST Salinggawi Dance Troupe (SDT), who recorded their worst finish in 19 years in this year’s UAAP Samsung Cheerdance Competition held at the Mall of Asia Arena Sunday.

With an Egyptian-themed routine that failed to execute a three-layer pyramid, the SDT crashed to seventh place with 546 points. The National University bagged its first-ever title, followed by defending champion University of the Philippines, and De La Salle University.

UST found some consolation by placing third in the group stunts category.

“It’s frustrating. We did not think about the win and only wanted to perfect our routine,” said SDT president Dan Dimaculangan.

The loss marked the third-straight year that the SDT failed to crack the Top 3. Its Rio-inspired performance was good only for fourth place last year.

“We learned a lot (from this experience). We need to step up and prepare early (for next year’s competition),” Dimaculangan said.

The NU Pep Squad, which performed an Arabian-inspired routine, clinched the title after collecting 696.5 points. The UP Pep Squad settled for the second spot with 620.5 points.

NU had a shaky start, but its heart-stopping stunts and successful pyramid formations more than made up for it.

DLSU’s Animo Squad exhibited a military-themed performance, which earned third place with 596.5 points.

Last year’s runner-up Far Eastern University Cheering Squad fell out of the Top 3 for the first time with its Tron-inspired presentation, which garnered 589.5 markers.

Adamson University Pep Squad (559.5 points), University of the East Pep Squad (559 points) and Ateneo de Manila University Blue Babble Battalion (514 points) placed fifth, sixth and eighth, respectively.

The criteria for judging were divided into two categories. The cheer criteria included stunts (100 points), pyramid (100 points), toss (100 points) and tumbling (100 points), while the dance criteria include overall effect (20 points), choreography (30 points), technique (20 points) and group execution (30 points).

UST and UP own the most number of championships in competition history with eight cheerdance titles apiece.

  1. I know its just cheerdance but come on, UST cheerdance is embarrassing. I hope they wil stop using the legendary name of Salinggawi if ganyan kapangit lagi performance nila

  2. Their performance was a total disaster. It was pure torture to watch. Choreography wasnt good either. Ang dami pa namang teasers ng sdt sa facebook na this could be the year (saling9awi ekek) but they are just giving the Thomasian communiy false hopes. You guys need to stop joining competitions if you’re not prepared. Mag train muna ng maayos, ok lang kahit walang UST representative next year muna. Miles and miles ahead na ang ibang mga teams and sdt needs A LOT of catching up to do. This is by far the worst SdT performance i’ve watch in 15 years. nung panahon ko sa ust (1998-2002), SDT ang kinakatakutang team. kapag naging 2nd place ang sdt sobrang lungkot na namin kasi we’re used to see them getting the championship. pero ngayon i can’t even describe what they’ve turned into… Please SDT, you represent this Uni so DO SOMETHING.

  3. We placed 3rd sa dance criteria, this just shows that Gawi is more of a ‘dance troupe’ than a ‘cheering squad’. It is time to divide Gawi into two subgroups, a dance troupe and a cheering squad. The Dance troupe will focus on the streetdance competitions like the UAAP’s annual latter this season and other competitions. The cheering squad on the other hand will focus on UAAP games halftime performances and UAAPCDC. More time for both to focus on their respective fields. With a diversififed population of 40,000 it is impossible to extract few talents for each groups. The dance troupe needs streetdance-worthy movers or jazz or interpretative. The cheering squad deserves muscles, strength, endurance, balance, focus and gymnast-like bodies. Just imagine how much time could be saved for each of these fields, kaya naaabutan tayo ng ibang universities kasi since summer na practice nila eh ang Gawi, may dance concert pa and shizz. -_-

  4. Performance was amateurish. Outfits seemed uncomfortable, very unflattering and looked hideous. Id like to at least give a little credit to Salinggawi but I couldnt simply because their performance gave me goosebumps in a really bad way. Sorry guys no offense, but come on.. this is what most Thomasians are (were) excited about. Definitely made a lot of us disappointed and students from other schools happy. It didnt even seemed like we competed. Its more like “lets just get this over with”.

Again, no offense but we had lost this competition before. The difference is that they still looked professional and well practiced even after defeat. With what we witnessed tonight, no wonder people reacts like this. Saying that you are a part of Salinggawi in this batch is something not worth being proud of, really.

  5. The performance was cringe-worthy. A disaster indeed. I respect their hardwork but definitely not enough. And can anyone remind them that CDC is a competition and not field demonstration. You join to mainly finish on top and get the trophy. That was the main point here, they don’t have a clear goal.

I’m a student at UST during the Gawi’s unprecedented 5 peat (2002-2006). Nakaka-miss ang glory days. Disappointing talaga ang previous years, specifically today’s performance.

Stop using a young batch. They’re not strong physically even emotionally. No will to win. They deserve 8th place not 7th!

  6. For years,Salinggawi has been the most prolific performers and NU cheering squad were the ones showing the poorest performance. Things have changed and with the way the group of SDT performes today, they resembled the NU CS of the past.Wag kasi puro press release na super galing nyo giving people false hopes.Sabi nga ng madami PURO press release wala naman palang ibubuga..Better go back to basics. Don’t tarnish the Legacy of our Salinggawi ..ibahin nyo na lang ang name nyo..better be called MALING GAWI!

  7. They always say na they’re going to bounce back. I hope their words na babawi and everything will be paralleled to their performance. Kapag sinabi nila na ginawa nila ang best nila, then I must say ang baba ng standards nila ng BEST. I’m saying this to push them harder because I know they can do way better than that through EARLY preparation for trainings, planning of NEW and UNIQUE routines, and CONDITIONING of their bodies(work out sa gym and everyday exercise because a lot of people noticed na parang hindi pang-flyer ang figure ng mga taga-SDT). Bottomline: Wag puro salita, gumalaw din at gumawa. They should also keep in mind what Sun Tzu said: Failure to plan=Plan to fail.

  8. I agree, after watching salinggawi’s performance this year, I said to myself it’s better not to perform next year if you guys (salinggawi) are not prepared. I dont see the passion in the performance. The song was ROAR, but instead I heard MEOW. I did’nt felt the spirit of winning, parang makapag perform na lang at matapos. kung ganun din man stop muna, pahinga pahinga din pag may time, kasi hindi lang kayo yung nasasaktan but the whole thomasian community. Last year’s performance ay di rin maganda but I am proud, and honestly lumakas ang tiwala ko, but now? I feel bad. The crown is not important but the PRIDE, and if you can’t hold that pride, stop na muna talaga. Nadudumihan ang naestablish na name ng Salinggawi.

  10. The name Salinggawi used to connote a sense of excellence when it comes to performance. However, in light of the recent CDC, Salinggawi has made a point that they could go lower when we all thought that the worst has already come to past. Echoing the comment of Simon, it’s just cheerdance, but come on, it’s embarrassing.

Give justice to the name of Salinggawi.

  11. Such a disgrace to the Thomasian community. Salinggawi before was a source of pride among Thomasians. PAg sinabing Salinggawi, WOW agad ang reaction. Now, I don’t even want to mention the name because of the humiliation associated to it. SAYANG ANG PANGALANG BINUO NG DATING SALINGGAWI. Sinira ng batch 2009-20013. The coach PAGADUAN is an arrogant person, too. Just look at how he responds to constructive criticisms of concerned Thomasians in the SDT FB page. And I heard, an established alumnus Fashion designer suggested not to use black as base in the costume because it doesn’t show much the details in dance moves. But look, the costume still was black. Disappointing Salinggawi. Admin should do something about this. Better stop using the name Salinggawi before these present members could ruin the hard-earned good reputation of the old Salinggawi.

  12. Please live up to the Salinggawi name. Huwag puro hype. At the very least decent sana ang pyramid formation, pero bakit? You owe it to the UST community. We will never forget.

  13. Napakasakit nilang panoorin kanina. I’ve never felt such struggle in a Salinggawi performance. The admin should tap more creative Salinggawi alumni as coach. Pagaduan doesn’t have the brilliance and creativity a winning team needs. He coached DLSU in the early 2000s and look where it led the squad to— nowhere. The cheermix even is so cheap and tasteless. The theme showed no creativity or artistry. Salinggawi needs a brilliant coach, like Ryan Silva in the early 2000s (but now has regressed and tarnished in time).

UST’s sports program is clearly on a downfall. Even the quality of education. This just right after its quadricentennial.

Just look at the UST website http://www.ust.edu.ph which has not been updated for almost a year, and you’ll know what I mean. Come on, the UST website should be the virtual personality of UST in the online world. But like the school itself, it has been left behind in the dust of the past.

  14. grabe naman mga comment nyo. pinaghirapan ng team ang routine nila. kung naexecute ng mabuti yun, may chance talagang manalo. to say na choreograhpy wasn’t good, sobra na yun. FYI, 3rd sila sa dance part, sobrang daming errors lang tlga sa stunts and pyramids kaya natalo. give credit to where credit is due. lahat tayo disappointed pero suportahan pa din natin and Salinggawi kahit anong mangyari. mas kelangan nila tayo ngayon.

  15. Maybe there is something bothering the team? Been watching them since 1996. But the performance are like dominoes falling continuously … Hope the UST do something now to get back the glory of the SDT.

  16. I’ve talked to my former classmate who was a Salinggawi before..during their time they always take home d trophy. there were even alot of comments like the other participants are just competing for d 2nd & 3rd place because Salinggawi always get d 1st place. but now, what happened? I think they really need to practice more, study, improve & reinvent themselves, learn new stunts & routines.

  17. All that training (?) went down the sewers. Did they even train at all? That was such a disappointment on the part of the cheerdancers. I can’t blame it on Coach Ramon because he has been coaching consecutive champs in his career and yet this batch of “Saliggawi” just tainted his record. Puro payabang kasi pagdating dun wala, palpak.

  18. I just spoke to a former classmate who was a Salinggawi before. during their timeUST always bring home d trophy…..there were even comments like in CDC other participants are just competing for d 2nd & 3rd place because it’s 100% sure that UST would always get d Championship title. but now what happened? I think Salinggawi should really practice more, improve on their stunts & routines, study, learn & reinvent themselves.

  19. Even if they are not yet performing, they all look fat and heavy. Not good to look at for a cheering squad like them. Hope this will be a wake up call for gawi. I’m telling this not because I hate Gawi, but because I love them so much. I don’t want others to look down on them.

  20. From all the feedbacks sa mga social media we’re expecting something good from SDT, frustrating lang watching them na ang daming laglag. Hindi ito yung kilala naming SDT. Tama na nung time namin before pag sinabing Salinggawi pag dating sa cheerdance nangunguna yan. Sad to say pero nakakahiya yung performance kanina. Sana maayos nyo to, you’re representing the University, please sana maayos for the whole Thomasian Community.

Di palagi masaya or successful ang ending. Apir!

  22. Third place for the stunts? I’ll call it consuelo de bobo. What I saw last Sunday was disappointing. But then again, I don’t want to be pessimistic about it. The golden age of Salinggawi is yet to come. Be ye ready, for the night is far spent, and the day is at hand.

  23. The “radiance” is long gone.. Hindi ko na maipagmalaki ang SDT like I used to during the good old days.. “Golden” age no more? Or is it because na sadyang mas mahina tuhod ng mga kabataan ngayon? Buti pa ang UP runner up.. 2nd to the last?! Naman! 20,000 plus UST students.. wala man lang makitang talent?! Ugh! Really had high expectations! Naghamon pa ako ng pustahan! Tsk tsk! Very disappointing to an unimaginable level!

  24. Let this serve as a lesson to the salinggawi. Champions fall and I’m hoping this is be their first and last fall yet. Cheerdancing is not easy. the Time sacrificed, Pain beared during training and Studies put on the line.
For now I can say congratulations to the Salinggawi! Even if they feel to the 7th place I still appreciate their effort. It may not be their best but their performance shouldn’t be degraded.

  25. i know that SDT has the tradition of being a dance troupe as stated in its name. back in the early 2000s the dance part of the CDC had most of the bearing in terms of scoring, but this season and the past 5 seasons the cheerdance either has the same or the higher bearing in terms of scoring. having said that, SDT oh i don’t know, refuses or simply does not have the will to step out of its comfort zone/tradition.

kaya nga tayo kasama sa usual contenders (FEU,UP,UST) ng CDC dahil alam ng public kung ano ang nilalatag natin sa competition. but in the past seasons and especially this one, nagkakalat lang tayo. anyare??? if you ask me, baka mawala na tayo sa list of contenders at papalitan na tayo ng NU starting next season. sobrang nalungkot talaga ako sa performance ng SDT kahapon na tinanong ko sa sarili ko kung SDT nga ba pinapanood ko.

i have nothing against the coaching staff, but i think maybe we could get other coaches/consultants from outside the SDT alumni so we could have fresh ideas. i love SDT as much as i love UST, becuase they represent the best and have a winning tradition. i don’t want that image to simply fade away. please prove to the Thomasian community that loves you so dearly that you still have what it takes to win at least a 3rd place.

if there are any SDT members reading this, i am not bashing or criticizing you. well consider it a constructive criticism. the Thomasian community is raring and very much hungry for an SDT podium finish. ngayon pa lang magtrain, conceptualize, workout and practice na kayo. kung pwede magcompete sa mini-competitions then go.

win or lose it’s the school we choose. the whole Thomasian community believes in you, but please believe in yourselves as well. Go USTe!

  26. Last September 13, Pep rally ng Salinggawi. Everyone was expecting of a great performance since yung mga press release #Saling9awi would be able to claim the 9th title. However after the pep rally, most of the students were not satisfied with the performance. After ng show alis alis agad. This means disappointed ang mga specatators.

I remember last year Pep Rally din and ganun din de ja vu talaga. Wag na muna mag yabang. Gawi should be more snappy like UP. Yung astigin yung kilos.

If Pagaduan is not effective then hire a new one. Its time for a change. Nakakdisappoint lng from 2007-2012 habang nag aaral ako wala silang nakuha championship. Then it came to the lowest point Gawi is dead 🙁

7 years of being dead 😐 Stop the curse.

  27. I was totally disappointed and sad about the team’s performance yesterday. Not because hindi sila naka-place man lang sa top 3, but because of what people from other schools are saying about UST. It hurts, really. I even had high hopes and confidence that UST might just get back the crown this year because of their posts in the Salinggawi fan page (the hashtag “Saling9awi” which denotes the team’s 9th win). It gave most Thomasians the impression that the team is well-prepared and that they will show the best routine in the competition. Sayang. But let’s be realistic guys. Dapat let’s give chance to others din. Sabi nga nila, “when you’re up, there’s no way but down” and vice versa. Let’s be pruoud pa din of our team. And kung nasira man ang name ng SDT this year, I think it’s better in a way na magiging kampante na ang other teams na hindi na nga magaling ang SDT. But let’s surprise them! I won’t lose faith in our team ever dahil mahal ko ang UST, and I’m proud of my school!

  28. I watch CDC every year and even took part of the team for 3 consecutive years. I went to UST 2002 and auditioned the next year. We had a hard time because the auditions were really tough. But what happened now? I know you guys train hard all the time, pero hindi lang naman isa ang pyramid, hinayaan nyo na yung iba eh. One fall is actually fine, pero yung sunod sunod na mali? Yan ba ang gusto bumawi? Or mag perfect ng routine? After the 2nd fall, the alumnus I’m with stood up our seats and went home. Seriously we’re dismayed…

  29. A lot has been said, mostly painful, hurting words, but I just hope, these words/comments/criticisms, whatever you may call it, would be enough to wake you up SDT, to do something, to correct the mistakes. I am an alumnus and it really pains me, to see my school placed 7th out of 8th competitors, when in the past, SDT has always been on the top. So what happened? It’s time to analyze things and do something about it. You still have the talent to be on top so worry not. Go on a retreat as a team and discern on what this setback meant to each one of you. You can still do it! I still have this faith in you. Please don’t be angry on your critics. We only want you to do your best always. Your critics are the real people who cares about you and who knows you can do best (not only better) always. They are the ones who can tell you the truth, even if that truth hurts. God bless us all. Proud to be a Thomasian!!!!

  31. Stop the filed demonstration-like performance with amateurish themes and passé costumes. This is CHEERDANCE! Dapat need to focus on the basics like gymnastics etc. I thing the troupe must be composed of fit people. Not that I am bringing down but what I see are flabs and thighs. I still believe that they can achieve it for next year. Just have the focus and determination. Go GAWI!

  32. This is from a friend and a former co SDT member….malungkot man tayo at naiinis sa nangyari…we should never forget…

    enjoy your history:

8TH title via 5 CONSECUTIVE VICTORIES(2006) , FIRST THREE-PEAT(1996) and FIRST 2ND THREE-PEAT(2004)…………..More than talent and skills, SALINGGAWI have HISTORY and LEGACY to begin with…

The UST Salinggawi Dance Troupe WON the FIRST THREE YEARS of competition from 1994 to 1996..( In 2001, UP Pep Squad matched the record of UST- 3 WINS)….in 1997 The competition was suspended for a year. ….In the 1998 season, UST Salinggawi Dance Troupe did not compete and instead joined the 1st Lipton Cheering Cup Competition.

In 2002, UST Salinggawi Dance Troupe regained the title….
IN 2002,2003,2004,2005,2006-SALINGGAWING-WAGINGWAGI – UST Salinggawi received their 8TH title via 5 consecutive victories(NAKAKALUNGKOT MANG ISIPIN AT AMININ…HINDING-HINDI NA MAKUKUHA NG UP…at kung makuha man..IT TAKES A DECADE or 2…KASI START ULIT SILA SA SIMULA…

    • I don’t think UP Pep Squad is still eyeing a 5-peat.

  33. “Akala niyo madali ang magbuo ng pyramid? Kayo kaya mag-compete!”
-Duh? Kaya nga sila ang sinali diba? Kasi it is their responsibility to do their best in that field. Kumbaga sa trabaho, may kanya-kanya tayong departments and we are expected to do our jobs. It’s not like pinilit sila para sumali sa SDT at mag-represent sa school ano. “Trabaho” nila yan, might as well do it good!

  34. Since freshie palang naman ako…I’ve heard from the upper batches, magaling talaga ang UST sa sports and cheerdance, ESPECIALLY the latter one. Pero, sa tingin ko, mali ung schedules nila pang pep rally…siyempre Friday yun, Sunday and performance, pagod na sila, sana mga 1 week before siguro? and synchronization lang naman sa steps, alam ko pag na-polish yun, naman! MAGALING ANG SDT 🙂 yung stunts, siguraduhin kasi na yung mga taong mage-execute nun, alam nila talaga…and what if hold a poll next year to let the students give their ideas for the theme? para teamwork ang buong community tapos inspired na sila nun manalo, di ba? #JustSaying ^_^

Be a team once more and i know you can do it!!! Fly high and soar high!!! GO USTE !!!

  36. I know it’s not right to blame the head coach of UST-SDT.. for what happen in this years UAAP cdc..but seriously I think Salinggawi Should consider changing there head coach..kasi look.. When La Salle hired coach Ruffa of UPHSD Altas pep squad.. they manage to go on the top 3 twice first 2nd place then 3rd place..di man champion atleast nasa top 3 and nung 2011 muntik masungkit ng La Salle ang 1rst place kung wala lang sila error.. So may improvements.. Diba talunan naman ang Animo Squad dati but look at them now.. some says dapat sila 2nd instead of UP.. so I think Salinggawi should change there Head coach.. ang Dami namang magagaling dyan and yung ihire ninyo yung May track records of Cahmpionships in cheerdance or cheerleading… Because if I’m not mistaken the current head coach of SDT made the Al La Salle routine before of La Salle.. natalo ata that time ang Animo..But none the less please bring the fire back yung bangis yung angas
