THE UST Golden Tigresses will have a new team captain ahead of the UAAP Season 80 volleyball tournament.
Ahead of their tournament January, head coach Emilio “Kung Fu” Reyes Jr. has appointed middle blocker Shannen Palec as the new captain, replacing high-leaping spiker Cherry Rondina. Libero Rica Jane Rivera will serve as co-captain of the squad.
Reyes said she wanted to let Palec exercise her leadership skills since she is the senior in the team.
“Si Shannen na yung pinaka-ate ng lahat. This time bago siya umexit, ma-excercise niya naman ‘yung [pagiging] leader na in authority talaga siya,” Reyes told the Varsitarian.
Palec, however, does not really mind her captaincy and would like to focus more on leading the Tigresses to victories.
“Expected na ako na mag-lead sa team kasi ako na ‘yung pinaka-senior. Para sa akin [may] pressure pero iniisip ko lang kung paano ko sila ili-lead at paano madadala yung mga games,” Palec said.
The Golden Tigresses finished third last season in their Final Four clash against De La Salle University, 14-25, 20-25, 26-24, 13-25, last April 22.
UST will join the Philippine Super Liga for the first time this year but the final team sponsor and lineup is yet to be announced.
