Growling Tigresses force do-or-die on UE

THE UST Growling Tigresses outlasted the twice-to-beat University of the East Lady Warriors, 63-53, to force a do-or-die match in the UAAP Season 80 women’s basketball tournament stepladder semifinals at the Mall of Asia arena Wednesday.

The rubber match is on Nov. 25, Saturday, 11 a.m., at the same venue.

UST’s Kikay Gandalla sank a triple with 11.9 ticks left in the payoff period to seal the win.

“We did it the way that we planned it in the last two days. We limited the touches of Love Sto. Domingo,” UST head coach Haydee Ong said.

A 15-5 Lady Warriors rally cut UST’s 16-point deficit to six, 53-59, with 1:17 left in the game.

The Tigresses banked on a strong performance in the first half to open up their largest lead at 18, 31-13.

UST turned the ball over 25 times compared to UE’s 11 turnovers.

UE shot a measly 17-for-80 from the field for 21.3 percent.

Anjel Anies led UST with 21 points while team captain Jhenn Angeles flirted with a triple-double with 12 markers, 11 boards and eight assists.

Ruthlaine Tacula paced UE with 14 points while Sto. Domingo had 12 markers on 4-of-11 shooting.
