UST swimmer bags silver in UAAP freestyle

Oct. 22 2016, 9:52 p.m. – UST SWIMMERS brought home only one medal on the second day of the UAAP Season 79 swimming tournament at the Rizal Memorial Stadium Saturday.

Female Tigershark Mary Angelic Saavedra bagged silver in the 400-meter freestyle behind Ateneo De Manila University’s Hannah Dato.

The Female Tigersharks now have two silver and four bronze medals while their male counterparts won a silver.

UST is now at third place in the women’s division with 73 points behind Ateneo’s 210 and University of the Philippines’ 189.

The Male Tigersharks ranked fourth with 38 points.

“I am satisfied in today’s result because my team followed the instruction to hit their best times. I cannot ask them what is impossible,” UST head coach Cyrus Alcantara told The Varsitarian.

Tigersharks Marc Given Madero and Jux Keaton Solita fell short against swimming powerhouses Ateneo, UP and De La Salle University in the  50-meter breast stroke and 400-meter freestyle events, respectively, but fell short .

In the juniors’ division, the UST boys’ team snatched a gold and two bronze medals while the girls’ squad collected a gold, a silver and a bronze.

Junior Female Tigershark Camille Buico set a new record in the 100-meter butterfly event with 1:05.20 seconds.

UAAP swimming continues tomorrow at the same venue.
