Tiger Jins dominate interschool tourney

THE UST Tiger Jins emerged as overall champion in the 2017 SMART/MVP Sports Foundation National Interschool Taekwondo Championships at the Rizal Memorial Stadium from Sept. 30 to Oct. 1.

Team captain Carlos Miguel and Cedriz Perez bagged gold medals in the flyweight and heavyweight divisions, respectively.

Rhayzon Catris (flyweight) and Gian Rubio (featherweight) brought home silver medals. Lennard Perez (bantamweight), and Ibert Lorbes (welterweight) won bronze.

“Makakatulong ‘yung naging laro namin dito para sa upcoming UAAP. So far we are on track sa goal namin and the team is well-conditioned already for the fight. ‘Yung mindset na lang during [the] fight ang kailangan pa ayusin,” Miguel told the Varsitarian.

The UAAP taekwondo championships are slated on Oct. 19 to 22.

In women’s play, Lady Jins Catry Balin and Brianne Ducay bagged gold and bronze, respectively, in the finweight division.

Rryshel Ramirez and Zay Cajes had gold and bronze in the bantamweight class.

Jovy Meguillo and Mary Gabrielle Limjoco (featherweight), and Charm Ragutana and Bea Go (heavyweight) bagged gold and silver in their respective divisions.

Team captain Marjelle Sy and AC Asegurado reaped silver in the welterweight and lighweight divisions, while Realis Tabiado (lightweight) and Laila Delo (welterweight) had bronze.

In the poomsae division, international poomsae artist Jocel Ninobla secured another gold medal for UST.

14 teams participated in the taekwondo championships.
