New coach heralds new Tiger era

A NEW era has dawned in the Tiger’s lair. The retirement of Coach Januario “Aric” del Rosario after the UAAP season had left the team without a head coach.

After months of speculations on who would fill the shoes of the enigmatic del Rosario, the Institute of the Physical Education and Athetics (IPEA) office has finally chosen Reonel “Nel” Parado.

Tiger Spikers 3rd in Iloilo tilt

IF the pre-season tournament is any indication of what lies ahead for the Tiger Spikers, then the Thomasian community can look forward to a bright season.

In an attempt to erase the bitter memory of their early exit in the UAAP last season, the UST Spikers nailed a third place finish in the Inter-Collegiate Tournament last March 28-April 5 in Iloilo City.

The Tiger Spikers finished a dismal fifth place, their worst finish in the last two decades, in the UAAP last season.

New rule ok’d for UAAP 67

UNIVERSITIES Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) coaches now have the luxury of having bigger 14-man rotation during games.

This was the latest rule change, which will take effect in the upcoming 67th UAAPseason.

The original proposal was to allow each team to submit 16-man rosters that can all play. But it was narrowed down to 14. In the previous seasons, the league allowed teams to have 16 players in their lineup but only 12 could play.

Tiger Cubs on a rampage in Fr. Martin’s Cup

DISPLAYING deadly form, the UST Tiger Cubs are now toting a 5-1 card after drubbing the University of the East (UE) Pages, 84-72, and the National University (NU) Bullpups, 63-58, in the ongoing Fr. Martin’s Cup.

Tigresses still in contention in Fr. Martin’s Cup

THE UST Tigresses evened their win-loss standing (2-2) as they routed the College of Saint Benilde Lady Blazers, 80-57, in the Fr. Martin’s Cup last May 23 at the San Beda College Gym.

Veteran Juvy Salazar gave the Tigresses an early boost on the offensive end with seven points in the first quarter, mostly on inside incursions. But it was Kath Buyco who gave the Taft-based dribblers the run-around with her outstanding ball handling and a couple of steals, leaving them scoreless during the entire half of the second canto.

Sunkist-UST Tigers axed in PBL

AFTER winning their first three games, the Sunkist-UST Tigers failed to sustain their hot start as they lost seven of their last eight games and got booted out in the eliminations of the Philippine Basketball League Unity Cup.

The exodus of key players hounded the RFM-backed Tigers all throughout the eliminations as they groped for the form that led them to the semifinals last conference. A spate of injuries added more woes to their latest campaign.

Alwyn Espiritu, Emerson Oreta and Dondon Villamin were signed up by the other teams prior to this conference.

Parado replaces Aric

COACHING in the Universities Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) is one of the most sought-after jobs of coaches dreaming to hit big time.

Tracksters fall to ‘mercenary’ athletes

UNEXPECTED opponents and the exit of a key player became the main reasons why the male tracksters, despite nailing a strong first-place finish last season, made a repeat of the 64th UAAP season drama, skidding down to fourth place in the just concluded 66th season.

After a year of rigorous training, all seemed well for the Tiger Tracksters until a key player decided to abandon them in January, just two months before the tournament. Joar Calvadores opted to enroll for the third semester at the De La Salle University after four years of wearing the Tiger jersey.

Softbelles yield title to Lady Falcons

THE EUPHORIA of their queen-size upset over the defending champions University of the East in the semifinals did not last long.

The UST Lady Batters’ amazing run came to an unexpected end as they were swept by the Adamson University Lady Falcons in the best-of-three finals of the UAAP softball.

In game one of the championship, the Lady Falcons rode on Loverly Parohinog’s homer in the early goings en route to a 3-0 shutout of the Lady Batters last Feb. 14 at the UST diamond.

UST Booters falter anew

DESPITE going 2-1 in their last three games, the UST Growling Booters still finished the UAAP football season with a losing record for the second straight year.

Needing a victory to have a lock on third place, the Growling Booters closed out their campaign with a bitter 1-0 loss to the Far Eastern University Tamaraw Booters last Feb. 22 at the Ateneo field.

Roy Clores played the assassin’s role as he scored the lone goal of the tightly fought match in the 55th minute.
