UST MOURNS DEATH OF SIN

THE UST community has joined the rest of the Filipino faithful in mourning the death of former Manila Archbishop Jaime Cardinal Sin, one of the country’s most influential religious and political figures of the past 30 years.

Rector Fr. Tamerlane Lana, O.P. said Sin is a great loss to the Church.

“He fulfilled the pastoral mission of balancing spiritual and socio-political dimensions of our lives,” Lana told the Varsitarian. “He left a mark on all the Filipino Catholics.”

Paddlers bow out early

REIGNING UAAP champs UST Paddlers learned a hard lesson after a head-on collision with seasoned smashers in the First Chief Philippine National Police Cup last April 4-6 at the Mr. Big Shot table courts in Gen. Santos City.

UST’s ace players Michael Paña, Glen Rodriguez, and Reyjea Rosales, finished eighth out of 20 participating teams in the three-day tournament, after losing 0-3 to Cebu-based Huaching Foundation led by UST alums and Philippine team members Harold Baring and Celjun Ortalla in the quarterfinals.

Tigresses off to fair start in Metro Ball tournament

THE UST Tigresses split their first two assignments in the Metro Ball Second Conference after notching a 55-39 victory against De La Salle University last May 14 at the Metro Gym in Mandaluyong.

Banking on the heroics of forward Remya Buenacosa, who scored 17 points, UST was in the driver’s seat throughout the match, seizing control of the game at the end of the third quarter, 38-31.

Paddlers cop bronze

THE TEAM of Paddlers head coach Henberd Ortalla, junior’s team coach Celjun Ortalla, and Glenn Rodriguez finished third in the 2nd Tirso Delos Reyes National Memorial Championships last Apr. 27-May 1 at the Ginubatan Session Hall in Albay.

Representing UST-Table Tennis Association of the Philippines (UST-TATAP), the trio fell short, 2-3, in the semifinals against Lopwes Table Tennis Association, which was led by the former RP team member Isiah Seronio.

Tiger Cubs lead NCR to ‘Palaro’ championship

POWERED by seven UST Tiger Cubs, the National Capital Region (NCR) reasserted its dominance in local high school cage wars with a classic seven-game sweep of the 2006 Palarong Pambansa basketball tournament last May 7-12 at the Metro Naga Sports Complex in Naga City.

Getting key contributions from Thomasians Jonathan Sarsonas, Carl Laconico, Owen Cunanan, Garby Aquino, Franz Perez, Julius Reyes, and former Tiger cub Daryl Basa, defending champion NCR posted an average winning margin of 19.4 points per game in the 14-region hoops meet.

Rookie Tigers involved in ‘basketbrawl’

A NEAR free-for-all spoiled the elimination round face-off between the UST Tigers and the De La Salle University (La Salle) Green Archers in the 12th Fr. Martin’s Cup Nike Summer League last May 12.

The incident broke out when La Salle center Brian Ilad threw a punch at Tiger forward Jhervy Cruz’ right cheek in a battle for the rebound with 1:42 left in the third quarter and the Archers on top, 49-29.

Tigers falter in Fr. Martin’s Cup

BARGING into the win column has never been easy for the UST Growling Tigers these days.

Playing without their old reliables, the Growling Tigers drew big numbers from their second stringers in a 70-50 rout of Ateneo de Naga University to secure their first victory in the 12th Fr. Martin’s Cup Nike Summer League last May 19 at the Emilio Aguinaldo College Gym.

Forward Kashim Mirza stood at the forefront of the Tigers’ offense with 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Daryl Basa added 10 points and three steals.

Tiger Dragons seize gold in Manila race

WEEKS before competing in the international arena, the UST Tiger Dragons proved they are dead-set in taking their game to the next level as they captured gold in the second Jam 88.3 FM Dragonboat Regatta Annual Championship last May 7 at the Manila Bay.

UST’s 18-man crew paddled its way to a new record of two minutes and 26.93 seconds in the 500-m course, leading by the length of almost two boats in the final leg to relegate De La Salle University (La Salle) to second place at 2:32.94. San Beda College was third at 2:45.01.

UAAP board: La Salle suspension is final

HOUNDED by criticisms on the UAAP board’s decision to suspend De La Salle University (La Salle) in the UAAP for a year, Fr. Ermito de Sagon, O.P. who led the investigation, said the board’s decision is final and irreversible.

De Sagon, UST’s Institute of Physical Education director, stressed that the UAAP board only followed the rule when it decided to sanction the Taft-based school for fielding two ineligible players in Season 68.

UST unfazed in Toribio Cup

THE UST Tiger Spikers began its UAAP warm-up on a high note, registering a pair of straight-set victories in the Fifth Toribio Cup at the University of the East-Recto gym.

Smarting from a painful loss against arch-rival Far Eastern University Tamaraws in the UAAP Season 68 finals, the Tiger Spikers exploited their opponents’ weaknesses to remain unbeaten in the 14-school event.

Against the taller Ateneo de Manila University Blue Spikers, the Tiger Spikers pounced on their foes’ brittle frontline defense for a 25-23, 30-28, 25-13 win last May 14.
