BASSIGThe Lady Eagles survived UST in five nail-biting sets, 19-25, 14-25, 25-17, 25-20, 13-15, behind league Best Player Alyssa Valdez, who exploded with 22 points. Phee Nok Kesinee and Dzi Gervacio added 15 and 12 points, respectively, for Ateneo.

Gervacio unleashed the game-winning spike to cap the Lady Eagles’ victory.

“Even if we didn’t win the championship, we were able to gain valuable experience, exposure, and playing time, especially for the young players,” UST coach Odjie Mamon said.

Tigers ousted in Filoil Preseason Cup, 5-4

The UST Growling Tigers dropped out of the Filoil Flying V Preseason Cup following a 68-77 loss to the National University in their semi-finals game at the Arena in San Juan last June 6.

Aljon Mariano topscored for UST with 16 points and six rebounds, while teammates Jeric Fortuna and Karim Abdul finished with 12 markers apiece.

“We played a good game, but we had too many turnovers plus a bad rotation on defense,” Fortuna said.

Mariano singlehandedly led the Tigers in the last frame, but UAAP Season 75 Most Valuable Player Bobby Ray Parks and Emmanuel Mbe teamed up to hold off UST and pull away for good. Things turned from bad to worse for UST when Abdul fouled out with 4:33 minutes left.

Top UAAP tennister second in Toby’s tourney

TOP UST Tennister Macy Gonzales bowed down to Arellano University’s Marian Capadocia, 2-6, 0-6, in their championship match-up in the 11th Toby’s Annual Summer Tennis Festival 2012 at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center from May 14 to 20.

Capadocia easily pinned down UAAP Season 74 MVP Gonzales, who was impeded by unforced errors and feeble attacks. Gonzales said she could have done better if she were in proper playing condition.

In the semi-finals, Gonzales swept a hapless Jenny Dizon of Davao City, 6-0, 6-0, after surviving Rachelle De Guzman of the University of Perpetual Help-Biñan, 7-6, 7-5, 6-3 in the quarterfinals. Gonzales crushed teammate April Santos in the eliminations, 6-3, 6-1.

Table tennis teams revived; former players to mentor the squad

SPORTS officials have tapped two former national team standouts to call the shots for the troubled table tennis teams, a month after they were deactivated due to a conflict between players and their head coach.

Former Tiger Paddler Lorinda Wadjad and San Beda College alumnus Joseph Cruz will now coach the women’s and men’s squads, respectively, in the coming UAAP season.

“We were looking for a former player and coach Wadjad was actually the one recommended by most of the people I talked to,” Institute of Physical Education and Athletics (IPEA) director Fr. Ermito de Sagon, O.P. said.

Wadjad then suggested Cruz, her former teammate in the Philippine team, to UST officials, De Sagon said.

TWO THOMASIAN jins contributed to the Philippines’ medal tally in the 2012 Asian Taekwondo Championships at the Phu Tho Stadium in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam from May 4 to 11.

Physics sophomore Marvin Gabriel received a gold medal in the poomsae (forms) men’s team under-29 category, while Tiger Jin veteran Christian Al de la Cruz earned a bronze in the kyorugi (sparring) senior’s men welterweight division. The national team finished with 1-2-3 gold-silver-bronze medal haul.

Gabriel, along with teammates Jean Sabido and Galilee Tinaya, bested competitors from 16 other countries.

Softbelles place third in off-season tilt

AN UNDERMANNED UST Softbelles settled for third place after losing to the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP), 1-2, in the Cebuana-Lhuillier Summer Grandslam 6 National Softball Championships at the Clark Parade Ground, Clark Freeport Zone in Pampanga from April 29 to May 5.

The Softbelles missed the services of national team players Melanie Laserna, Esmeralda Tayag, and team captain Karen Paghubasan, relying on rookies Bea del Rosario and Mallows Garde.

UST mainstay KJ Lacupa led a scoring a run on a “pitcher-catcher” error on top of the fourth inning, 1-1. But PUP scored the winning hit in the eighth inning via a sacrifice bat.

UST warms up via nat’l games

WITH just over a month left before the UAAP hostilities begin, Thomasian athletes, including the Salinggawi Dance Troupe (SDT), reaped awards in the POC-PSC Philippine National Games.

UST fencers placed third in the group division of the men’s and women’s foil, and men’s and women’s saber at the Philsports Arena Fencing Hall in Pasig last May 25.

Foil head coach Emerson Segui was the lone medal winner for UST in the singles event, taking home a silver in the men’s foil tournament.

“I expected more from the team since they played well during the past UAAP season. But these games can really prepare them for season 75,” Segui said. “I did not play during the group stages to let the players play on their own.”

Thomasians beef up American-football team

ONE OF America’s favorite sports has arrived in the Philippines and Thomasians are part of the craze.

Eight Thomasians have been tapped to join the country’s official American football team, The Philippine Punishers, following open try-outs in November last year.

Now part of the 44-man squad are Bong Tamayo, Otto Wong, Manu Jigo, and Terence Marca of the Faculty of Engineering, Mark Joshua Castro of the Faculty of Arts and Letters, Mel Calletor of Medicine, Robin Bunagan of Nursing, and Ken Tan of the College of Fine Arts and Design.

“A lot of people think that the sport is expensive and that Filipinos are not that big compared to other races. The sport is for everyone, no height requirement or weight restrictions,” Marca said.

UST WILL be without its table tennis squads “for the time being,” following a dispute between head coach Henberd Ortalla and his players.

Both camps have traded formal charges before the Office of the Rector, prompting school officials to disband the entire table tennis squad and not to reappoint Ortalla and assistant coach Jackson Que.

Ortalla had been coaching UST since 1997 and led the school to eight men’s and six women’s titles. His contract expired last March 31.

Cubs dumped out of race

SADDLED by terrible offensive and defensive plays, the UST Tiger Cubs bowed out of contention in the Filoil Flying V Preseason Hanes Cup after falling prey to San Beda College, 60-80, at the Arena in San Juan last May 28.

The Tiger Cubs solely banked on Nicko Bahia, who fired 20 points on top of four rebounds. UST ended its campaign with a 2-3 win-loss slate.

Arvin Tolentino, Jess Diputado, and Ranbill Tongco combined for 35 points to keep San Beda undefeated in four games.

“Our team (UST) lacks big men and those who were expected to step up did not do well,” coach Allan Ascue said.

Down by as much as 19 points in the last frame, UST found a bit of relief from Paolo Corre, who scored on a lay-up and sank two free throws.
