THE UST Lady Tennisters thrashed the University of the Philippines Lady Maroons to kick off their UAAP Season 79 campaign at the Rizal Memorial Stadium Saturday.
UST swept all of its five matches with only one match reaching a third game.
Lady Tennister Erika Manduriao triumphed over Danielle Carranza, 6-1, 6-1 while Kendies Malinis made quick work of Monivic Santos, 6-1, 6-3.
UST’s Precian Rivera concluded single’s play with a statement win over UP star Nicole Eugenio, 6-0, 4-6, 6-3.
In double’s action, Ingrid Gonzales and April Santos pulled off a 6-2, 6-3 victory over UP’s Dana Uy and Monica Cortez.
The Gitalan and Caorte then wrapped up the day with a 6-1, 6-3 sweep over the Banez-Valdez duo.
“It was a strong start for the team, I’m really glad [my] players played well today,” UST head coach Dennis Sta. Cruz told the Varsitarian in an online interview.
The Male Tennisters’ matches against UP were cancelled due to heavy downpour of the rain. The games will be played on March 1.
Up next for the Lady Tennisters are the De La Salle University Lady Archers tomorrow, 12 noon, while the Male Tennisters will face the National University Bulldogs tomorrow, 2 p.m., at the same venue.
