THE UST Tennisters split their games against the Ateneo de Manila University Tennisters in the UAAP Season 80 lawn tennis tournament at the Rizal Memorial Complex Sunday.
The Male Tennisters ran out of gas against the Ateneo Blue Tennisters, 2-3, after Ateneo Tennister Marcen Gonzales crushed Laurence Obdina, 6-1, 6-0, to seal the win.
UST’s Dave Mosqueda lost to Ino Canlas, 1-6, 3-6, while Jaffary Cariga suffered a 6-7, 2-6 defeat to Bong Gonzales.
UST’s wins came in the doubles’ division as duo Mart Cabahug and En-en Lopez trounced Erj Gatdula and Luke Flores, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3. The pair of Dominic Lanzado and Bernlou Bering dominated Ateneo duo Anton Punzalan and Julian Dayrit, 6-3, 6-4.
“Kailangan namin mag-adjust kasi since nangyari ‘yung injury ng doubles player ko na si Lagahit, nagkagulo na ‘yung lineups namin,” UST head coach Alexander Diego told the Varsitarian.
In women’s play, UST’s Erika Manduriao bested Ateneo’s Camille So, 6-0, 6-3, while UST duo Precian Rivera and Eb-eb Caorte registered a 6-2, 6-2 win over Ateneo pair Alexis Mclean and Martina Bautista.
Female Tennister Kendies Malinis iced the deal for UST with a win over Lady Tennister Jana Pages, 1-6, 6-2, 6-3.
The Female Tennisters rose atop the standings with a 2-0 win-loss record while their male counterparts ended the first round at third place with a 2-2 card.
The Female Tennisters will face the University of the Philippines on Feb. 18, Sunday, at the same venue.
