THE UST Golden Tigresses fell prey to defending champions De La Salle University Lady Spikers, 23-25, 25-16, 14-25, 22-25, in the UAAP Season 79 women’s volleyball tournament at the San Juan Arena Saturday.

La Salle tallied 10 blocks and 10 aces to keep UST winless in two outings.

Down 4-17 in the fourth set, the Tigresses scored a 17-6 blitz to keep the game close at 21-23. But Desiree Cheng’s cross court kill sealed the La Salle the victory.

“Ngayon, may magagandang part na nilaro tapos lumabas na naman ‘yung sakit (errors). May mga lapses pero ganoon talaga,” UST head coach Emilio “Kung Fu” Reyes Jr. said in an interview with the Varsitarian.

“On a positive note, dahil sa mga exposures namin the past months, dumidikit na kami sa ibang teams,” he said.

The Lady Spikers were waxing hot in the third set, zooming to a 20-13 lead before earning the 2-1 set advantage following a monster block from Kim Dy that capped a 5-1 run.

Dy led the Lady Spikers with 16 points while Earnestine Tiamzon and Joy Baron added 14 and 10, respectively.

UST held a 15-12 advantage in the second set until it pulled away for good off a 9-3 spurt.

EJ Laure and Mary Dominique Pacres paced UST with 13 points apiece while team captain Cherry Rondina and Marivic Meneses combined for 20 markers.

The Tigresses will try to enter the win column as they face the University of the East on Feb. 15, Wednesday, 2 p.m., at the same venue.
