THE UST Tiger Spikers swept the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons, 25-17, 25-22, 25-15, in the 1st Premier Volleyball League Collegiate Conference at the Arena in San Juan Saturday.

The Tiger Spikers trailed early in the third set before zooming in for a 10-2 run to take a commanding 17-7 lead. Tiger Joshua Umandal then sealed the match with an off-the-block hit, 25-15.

“Everyone went all out when we were given the chance to show what we learned from all the trainings we’ve had since we started preparing (for the PVL),” team captain Isaiah Icalina told the Varsitarian.

UST was at set point, 24-20, when the Maroons threatened to extend the set but Tyrone Carodan’s check ball gave the Tiger Spikers a two-set cushion.

Former UE Junior Warrior standout Umandal led UST with 13 points while Arnold Bautista chipped in eight markers.

Nicolo Consuelo and Wendel Miguel paced UP with eight points apiece.

The Tiger Spikers will next face the De La Salle University on September 4, Monday, 10 a.m., at the same venue. with reports from Rhenwil James G. Santos
