Junior Tiger Spikers drop UAAP opener vs FEU

THE UST Junior Tiger Spikers took a 20-25, 25-10, 23-25, 21-25 beating against the FEU-Diliman Baby Tamaraws in their UAAP opener at the Arena in San Juan Sunday.

UST’s Rey de Vega led all scorers with 16 markers while Mark Calado paced the Tamaraws with 12 points .

Tied at 17-all in the fourth set, FEU sparked a late run capped with back-to-back hits from Benny Martinez to ice the match.

UST assistant coach Rommenl Abella attributed the loss to opening game “jitters.”

“Hindi namin na-sustain ‘yung momentum. ‘Yun ang kailangan nating i-work out…hindi natin ma-sustain ‘yung lamang towards the end of the set,” he the Varsitarian.

The Baby Tamaraws uncorked an 11-4 blitz late in the third set to reach set point, 24-20. Jose Javelona gave FEU a 2-1 set lead after a crosscourt kill.

UST unloaded a 19-8 bomb in the second frame for a commanding 23-9 lead before team captain Lorenz Señoron denied an FEU spiker to tie the game at one set apiece.

UST will try to bounce back against the De La Salle-Zobel on Sept. 13, Wednesday, 2 p.m., at the same venue.
