De la Rosa delivers valedictory

AFTER four centuries, UST remains “timeless and forever timely.”

Drawing parallels between the celebrations of 1911 and 2011, the Rector showed how history repeated itself in the Quadricentennial and Neo-Centennial festivities as he delivered his “end-term” report at the Quadricentennial Pavilion last March 19.

Fr. Rolando de la Rosa, O.P., who recently ended his third term as rector of Asia’s oldest university, noted that the centerpiece project of the Quadricentennial celebration, “Simbahayan,” was similar to the project initiated by Thomasians for the UST tricentennial in 1911.

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said in a statement last month that the inauguration of the “Fray Miguel de Benavidez (sic) Library” in Carrion de los Condes in Palencia—birthplace of the UST founder—was led by Philippine Ambassador to Spain Carlos Salinas, himself a UST alumnus, and Palencia Mayor Francisco Javier Villafruela Fierro last Feb. 26.

“During the short ceremony, Ambassador Salinas read a heartfelt letter of congratulations addressed to Mayor Villafruela from the UST Rector Fr. Rolando de la Rosa, O.P. and donated books on the UST and the Philippines on behalf of Fr. De la Rosa and the embassy,” the DFA said.

Medicine improves curriculum

IN WHAT would be a first in Asia, UST’s medical school will soon be using ultrasound machines as instructional tools—a far cry from the traditional books, diagrams, pictures, and cadavers—to help provide “real life” education.

Next academic year, the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery will become Asia’s pioneering school in the adoption of an ultrasound curriculum for students in the first to fourth years.

Ultrasound machines, commonly used to monitor pregnancy, can also be used to see body structures under the skin ncluding tendons, muscles, joints, vessels, as well as internal organs, to detect possible diseases or tissue abnormalities.

UST PAID tribute to its exceptional graduates at The Outstanding Thomasian Alumni (Total) awards last March 31, with the Rector calling this year’s awardees “Atlases” who carry the University on their shoulders.

“You are outstanding because you help other people look farther by offering your shoulders for them to stand on,” De la Rosa told the honorees. “You are Atlases—carrying all of us on your shoulders—and we are thankful that you have not shrugged us off.”

He added that outstanding people pose a danger “to people who make a virtue out of mediocrity.”

Rector: ‘Familiarity breeds contempt’

GRADUATION is necessary so as not to be too familiar with the surprises life has to offer, Fr. Rolando de la Rosa, O.P., Rector of UST, reminded the “Neo-Centennial Batch” at the Baccalaureate Mass last March 23.

While associated with separation, graduation is important since “familiarity breeds contempt,” the Rector said.

Commerce professor leads Dangal ng UST Awards honorees

THE UNIVERSITY honored exemplary faculty members at the 13th Dangal ng UST Awards last March 19.

Then Rector Fr. Rolando de la Rosa, O.P. led the rites and applauded the academic employees for their outstanding qualities. De la Rosa resigned last March 31, a month before the end of his term to give way to the process of selecting the next rector.

“Ako’y natutuwa sapagkat ang ating Pamantasan ay hindi pinamumugaran ng mga walang hiya at mga tamad. Dito sa UST, ang mga guro at manggagawa ay mga taong marangal at mga taong may hiya,” De la Rosa said. “Sa pamamagitan ng katagang [Dangal ng UST], naipapakita n’yo sa buong daigdig na kayo ang nagdadala ng dignidad at karangalan sa UST.”
