CBCP: Abortion remains a ‘grave offense’ despite absolution

4 September 2015, 2:23 pm - POPE FRANCIS has given all priests the authority to absolve the mortal sin of abortion during the coming Extraordinary Jubilee Year of the Catholic Church, but it remains a "grave offense," the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) said.

In a pastoral letter titled “Understanding Pope Francis’ gesture rightly" published on Sept. 3, CBCP President and Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Socrates Villegas said the absolution of abortion would not make the sin less serious. Instead, it makes God’s mercy more visible.

"This does not make the sin less grievous. What it does is make the mercy of God more tangible through the ministry of the Church,” Villegas said.

Ngunit hindi kailanman mag-eendorso ang Simbahan ng sinumang kandidato, bagkus ay ipauubaya ang pagpili sa mga botante, pahayag ng Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP).

‘No one should suffer’ with K to 12 implementation — CBCP

July 15, 2015, 6:53 a.m. – THE CATHOLIC Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) is urging the government to ensure that college professors keep their jobs during the transition period of the K to 12 program in 2016.

Archbishop Socrates Villegas, CBCP president, asked government agencies, schools, and parents to maintain an “attitude of openness and respect” in dealing with the K to 12 program in the pastoral letter “Advancing in wisdom and favor before God and man” released Tuesday.

Villegas reelected as CBCP president; Tagle gets new Vatican post

July 12, 2015, 2:22 p.m. - LINGAYEN-Dagupan Archbishop Socrates Villegas has been reelected as president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP).

Villegas told the Varsitarian he accepted the reelection with courage and determination.

“When I see my weak self and lack of experience, I am overcome with fear. When I gaze on the face of God rich in mercy, I take courage and regain my hope and courage. Thus, I accepted the reelection,” Villegas said in a text message to the Varsitarian which was also posted a few minutes later on his official Facebook account.

Villegas, who recently joined the Dominican Clerical Fraternity of the Philippines, became CBCP president in 2013, replacing Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma.

Church reiterates teachings on marriage; vows pastoral care for homosexuals

June 29, 2015, 4:33 p.m. - THE CATHOLIC Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) stood firm on the Church's teachings on marriage following the legalization of same-sex unions in the United States.

Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Socrates Villegas, CBCP president, said on Saturday that the Church would continue to stand by the teachings that declare marriage as an “indissoluble bond of man and woman.”

CBCP head joins Dominican order

June 15, 2015, 11:00 a.m. - THE HEAD of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) is now a member of the Dominican Clerical Fraternity of the Philippines (DCFP).

Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Socrates Villegas, CBCP president, received the habit of Saint Dominic during the vespers of the Dominican Community of Manaoag last June 12 at the Minor Basilica of Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary of Manaoag in Pangasinan. Fr. Gerard Timoner, O.P., prior provincial, led the celebration.

Villegas considered it a blessing to be part of the Dominican order.

CBCP to voters: Shun political dynasties, ‘inexperienced’ bets

June 10, 2015, 12:18 p.m. - LESS than a year before the 2016 national elections, the head of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) warned voters against “spin doctors,” political dynasties, and “inexperienced” candidates.

CBCP President and Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Socrates Villegas reminded voters that the right to suffrage was not merely a political right, but a moral obligation. He urged them to vote for the “right reasons.”

‘Interreligious dialogue key to stopping violence and extremism’
