De la Rosa kin proud, elated of rector’s third term

WHEN GOD closes a door, He opens a window. And it seems the window for Fr. Rolando de la Rosa, O.P. had been so wide that he easily “fit in.”

After the death of the De la Rosa’s parents in the late 1980’s, Bernie and Gloria Pamintuan, family friends of the De la Rosas, welcomed the future UST rector in their abode as the newest family member. The young Dominican priest had found a new home.

“We adopted Father De la Rosa and opened our home to him,” Bernie told the Varsitarian during the Rector’s installation.

Tuition soars by 5 percent

Former Archi dean honored

A FORMER dean of the old College of Architecture and Fine Arts (CAFA) was named Most Outstanding Professional of the Year in the field of Architecture by the Professional Regulations Commission (PRC).

Yolanda Reyes, CAFA dean from 1991 to 1999, received the award last June 20 at the Manila Hotel, after being recommended by her colleagues for her valuable contributions to the field.

Other Thomasians who had received the award were Leandro Locsin in 1978 and Cesar Canchela in 2007.

PolSci, Philo seniors lead ‘V’

A NEW batch of Thomasian campus journalists from the nine faculties and colleges of the University is set to continue the 80-year-old legacy of the Varsitarian, the country’s oldest and most respected Catholic campus paper.

After competitive examinations and interviews by a Selection Committee, Anthony Andrew Divinagracia, a Political Science major, was named editor in chief. Philosophy major Levine Andro Lao is the new managing editor. Both are from the Faculty of Arts and Letters.

Santisimo parish helps calamity victims

THE SANTISIMO Rosario Parish has recently extended humanitarian aid to victims of natural calamities in China and Sta. Cruz, Zambales, through food and cash donations.

The relief package consisted of more than 10 sacks of rice and other food supplies like instant noodles aside from P24,000 in donations which Santisimo Rosario parish, headed by Fr. Jaime Alamillo, O.P., had distributed among the affected families in China and Zambales.

Research units closed for review

THE BALLOONING budget for research has prompted a move to streamline the University’s research centers, with no less than the new Rector calling for a leaner organization and for research outputs that can be patented, commercialized, and used to help Filipinos cope with the hard times.

Grad School enters top business school list

THE UST Graduate School has obtained one of the top recommendations among graduate business schools in the Philippines, an international survey showed. The school got a recommendation rate of 20 per 1,000 business schools, deans who voted online between October 2007 and March 2008 in the EdUniversal survey, which covered top business schools from 151 countries.

The survey, conducted by SMBG, a French consultancy firm, aims to help students in finding the best business school in terms of geographical location and international tie-ups.

Commerce professsor escapes ambush, motive still unclear

A PROFESSOR from the College of Commerce and Business Administration and his companions fell victims to four armed men aboard two motorcycles along Araneta corner Quezon avenues last June 12.

‘Recycled’ Rector breaks ice

HIS INSTALLATION ceremony was meant to be strictly formal, but UST Rector Fr. Rolando De la Rosa, O.P. injected light-heartedness in the otherwise solemn and stuffy air of the jam-packed Santisimo Rosario Chapel with a couple of witty and funny remarks when he delivered his acceptance speech as the University’s 95th rector.

De la Rosa, no longer new to the rectorship game, served in the position for two terms, from 1990 to 1998.
