Pope Francis has appointed a Thomasian bishop to the Diocese of Lucena in Quezon.

Msgr. Mel Rey Uy will replace Bishop Emilio Marquez who is retiring after serving the diocese for 14 years.

The 49-year-old prelate is the diocesan bursar of Romblon and director of the Romblon Diocesan Commission on Liturgy and the Diocesan Pastoral Secretariat.

Uy studied theology and obtained his master’s degree in philosophy at the University of Santo Tomas. He is the auditor of the UST Alumni
Priests’ Association Batch 1992.

The bishop-elect was born in San Agustin, Romblon on January 6, 1968 and was ordained priest on May 24, 1994.

As a Basic Ecclesial Community (BEC) director, he organized the first diocesan BEC fellowship in Romblon calling for a new evangelization.

He previously served as spiritual director, teacher, parish priest, director and diocesan chancellor in the Diocese of Romblon.
