POPE FRANCIS has appointed Italian Archbishop Gabriele Giordano Caccia as the new apostolic nuncio to the Philippines.

Caccia will be succeed Archbishop Giuseppe Pinto, who served as the Vatican’s representative to the Philippines for six years before his transfer to Croatia in July.

This will be the 59-year-old diplomat’s second assignment after being appointed by Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI as nuncio to Lebanon in 2009.

Caccia was born in Milan, Italy on Feb. 24, 1958, and was ordained priest on June 11, 1983.

On Sept. 12, 2009, he was consecrated bishop. He later served as assessor for general affairs of the Vatican’s Secretariat of the State.
