THE F. Sionil Jose Young Writers Award has adopted an artificial intelligence (AI) verification policy for this year’s edition of the literary competition.
To safeguard “human creativity,” the policy requires entrants to submit drafts, revision histories, research notes or other supporting materials to establish that they authored their entries.
“Entries for which satisfactory evidence of predominantly human authorship cannot be provided, including those suspected of undisclosed generative AI authorship, may be disqualified,” the competition said in a Facebook post on July 13.
The annual competition, supported by the family of the late National Artist for Literature F. Sionil Jose, is accepting short stories in English and Filipino from Filipinos aged 30 and below until Aug. 15.
Winners in each language category will receive P25,000 for first prize, P15,000 for second prize and P10,000 for third prize.

The awarding ceremony will be held in October at De La Salle University.
Other local literary competitions have taken different approaches to dealing with AI.
The Don Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature did not include a similar verification protocol in its guidelines, while De La Salle University’s annual Literary and Visual Arts Awards required contestants to submit an AI declaration form. Dan Cedric T. Latasa
