PROF. Melanie Turingan, dean of the UST Faculty of Arts and Letters, has been appointed acting member of the board of directors of the Philippine Postal Corp. (PHLPost).
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. signed Turingan’s appointment to the state-owned postal services provider on Oct. 6.
Turingan stays on as Artlets dean, as a board directorship is not a full-time engagement. The board of directors is the highest governance or decision-making body in a corporation.
Turingan joins the seven-person PHLPost board headed by Stephen Cruz, a retired Court of Appeals justice.
PHLPost, which has more than 3,000 employees and operates 1,220 post offices nationwide, is bound to provide universal postal services as a member of the Universal Postal Union.
It also provides franking privileges, or free postage, to 22 government agencies and individuals as provided for by various laws.
PHLPost is preparing to retrofit the Manila Central Post Office, a landmark neoclassical structure that had served as its headquarters before it was gutted by fire in May 2023.
A history professor before transitioning to administration, Turingan was appointed Artlets dean in 2023 after serving as assistant dean in 2022.
She had held roles as UST assistant registrar, College of Nursing secretary, and coordinator of the Department of Social Sciences.
Turingan earned her bachelor’s degree in Asian studies from UST in 2002, completed further studies in history at UST in 2004, and received her doctorate in Philippine studies from De La Salle University in 2016. Amanda Luella A. Rivera
